Back in the 11th century South Lancashire was divided into six districts of which a town in the North of England –close to St Helens and Prescot was to become well known. In those early days it was referred to as Quitstan and its name evolved over the years to the town we know today as Whiston. A rural location Whiston was in its early years a centre of agricultural trade, and it wasn’t until the early 16th century that coal was first mined in the area. There were a number of mineshafts sunk in and around the area however by the late 1800’s these had all but closed.
