The former village of Hackney is at the heart of the east-London borough which takes its name. An historic village, it became a posh countryside address during the Tudor era, surrounded by the grand homes of aristocrats. But centuries later, when the railway rolled in, Hackney was ready for industrialisation and extensive house-building. Today, the re-named Hackney Central retains one ancient relic - a 13th Century tower surviving from the medieval St Augustine's Church. Hackney spreads itself out around Mare Street, and a little further beyond it to the north.
