Ormskirk is a market town located in the North West of England in the county of Lancashire. The name Ormskirk is thought to be Scandinavian in origin, the Vikings landed on the coast in the 9th century and came inland and founded a church – the placename is therefore thought to be derived from the leader of the Vikings – Orm and the Scandanavian word for church “kirk†– hence Ormskirk. A mainly agricultural area with high quality land it is no wonder that in Tudor times many of the nobility had property in the area, Lord Stanley a descendant of one of the sovereigns of the Isle of Man lived at the Mansion House in St Helens Road and the Lathoms who owned the original Lathom Hall.
