Barking is a suburban town in east London and the main district of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The manor of Barking was the site of Barking Abbey, which dates from AD 666. Today only the ruins of the Abbey remain, together with the Curfew Tower, alongside the Norman church of St. Margaret's where Captain James Cook was married. Fishing was the most important industry in Barking from the 14th century, until the mid-19th. Fisher Street was named after the fishing community there. A steel sculpture titled The Catch references Barking’s fishing heritage and can be found on the Fanshawe Avenue roundabout, close to the town centre.
