The town of Yate lies at the south west extremity of the Cotswold Hills. Its origins date back to AD 770 with the existence of a religious house in the area and the town is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086. The earliest evidence of human life in the area comes in the form of a Neolithic burial chamber. Those interested in the rich history of Yate can learn more by visiting the Yate Heritage Centre. As well as exhibits including historical objects, the centre hosts lectures and workshops. The area has three main minerals associated with it's history, coal to the west, limestone to the east and celestine or spar in the centre.
