At the north east corner of the Cartmel peninsula the village of Witherslack is easily reachable by car, sitting just a few miles along the A590 from junction 36 of the M6, with the genteel resort of Grange-over-Sands a further five minute drive south west. But the tiny settlement is also conveniently out of the way, a feeling enhanced by its wooded surroundings and the hills behind it. Once part of Lancashire but in 1974 incorporated in Cumbria, Witherslack provides a good base for exploring the Southern Lakes – it is on the quiet back-roads that lead to Windermere via Cartmel Fell and Bowland Bridge, a route that in high-season may be very attractive for travellers.
