Winsford is to be found in Cheshire almost equidistant between Manchester and Liverpool, lying on the Cheshire Plain set amongst the lush farmland of the surrounding countryside. Historically it was an agricultural community however the town developed as a result of the large salt deposits that were relatively easy to access. Alongside Northwich Winsford was an important producer of salt and in order to export it the canal system proved to be invaluable, the River Weaver was canalised around the late 18th century and this allowed the salt to be transported to Liverpool for export.
