Wincanton is a small town in Somerset that lies on the main A303 trunk road running from Basingstoke in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon. The town has some light industry and is the original home of Wincanton PLC, Europe's second largest logistics company. The town is also home to North Downs Dairy, the producers of Pilgrims Choice Cheddar. Wincanton is also famous for its racecourse, which won the Small Racecourse of the Year award in 2007. In the 17th century the town was the site of the first skirmish in the Civil War, which removed King James II from power, effectively ending Catholic rule, absolute power of the Monarchy and establishing Parliamentary power in England.
