Whitley Bay, in North Tyneside, is a town situated on the coast of the North Sea with beaches stretching from St Mary’s Island to Cullercoats. Once a popular holiday destination, the name was changed to avoid confusion with Whitby further down the coast in East Yorkshire. Referred to in various ancient documents and maps as Witelei, an Anglo-Saxon term meaning ‘White Meadow’, Whitley was first mentioned around 1100AD when King Henry I conferred it along with other possessions, to the Priory of Tynemouth.
