Whiteness is an ancient hamlet and parish on the Shetland mainland in Scotland situated on the west coast, 7 miles north of Lerwick and 3 miles north of Scalloway. The Shetland Isles were acquired by Scotland from Scandinavia in 1468 and the name ‘Whiteness’ comes from the old Norse meaning ‘white headland’ describing its position on the coastline which is indented with a sea loch or ‘voe’ which cuts deep into the land up to the heathery hills and green crofts.
