Whitchurch is believed to be the oldest continually inhabited market town in Shropshire and can trace its history back to the Romans in around 70AD but little evidence of this settlement exists today. What you will find in Whitchurch however are medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings which provide an insight as to how popular Whitchurch has been through the ages. It is believed that Whitchurch took its name from a Norman church built out of the local stone but today there are no remains of the building however the town does have a magnificent 18th century church known as St Alkmunds built out of red sandstone.
