Originally consisting of a farm and a few cottages, local businessmen in 1860 developed the area in northeast Kent beside St Mildredâ€™s Bay and West Bay as a seaside resort for the middle classes. Its two sandy beaches remain popular today. Sea walls and groynes were built around both bays to provide protection for both beaches and town from coastal flooding. A Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base was located here during World War I in order to protect the Thames Estuary and its coastal towns.
