West Malling used to be known as Town Malling and is a historic market town in Kent, 35 miles from London. St Mary’s Abbey in Swan Street was founded around 1090 and is still occupied by Anglican Benedictine nuns. The true scene of a painting by artist JMW Turner was recently discovered as being that of St Mary's Abbey. St Leonard's tower was built around 1080 by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, and is a fine early example of a Norman tower keep. The High Street is lined on both sides with some fine Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian houses such as Ford House and Prior House on King Street.
