The name of Cowes is synonymous with sailing, and it never disappoints the thousands who come to absorb this past and present tradition. The town, at the island's north peak, is divided into facing parts by the estuary of the river Medina. West Cowes is the bigger and busier destination: it's at the centre of the action during the world-famous Cowes Week, held annually in August, and the many other yachting and powerboat events happening over the season. This is also the home, in Cowes Castle, of the Royal Yacht Squadron, one of the world's most elite sailing clubs.
