West Camel is a small picturesque village with a population of about 400. Situated in the south of Somerset about seven miles north of Yeovil, it offers easy access to the A303 which runs just north of the village. The village does not get its name from the animal but actually from the village's Saxon name of Cantmeel meaning bare ridge. Settlements in the area go back at least to the 10th century with the earliest written references being a grant from Aethelred II of the village to the monks of Muchelney Abbey.
