If you find yourself in the Welsh Marches in the upper reaches of the River Severn and not too far from England yet nestling in Wales then the chances are that you are in Welshpool in one of the busiest market towns that Montgomeryshire has to offer. The area was, it is believed, first settled some 4,000 years ago by Neolithic Man and since then it has played host to Celtic tribes and the Romans who tried to invade but were held back by Carradoc, inevitably though the Romans established their rule and the area in and around Welshpool still bears their mark forts and roads today.
