Waternish (or Vaternish) is a historic district on the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland situated on the peninsula to the north-west of the Isle with Loch Dunvegan to the west and Loch Snizort to the east. ‘Waternish’ comes from the Norse for ‘Vatnenes’ meaning ‘headland of the pond’ the area is made up of the small hamlets of Trumpan, Gillen, Hallistra, Hallin, Stein and Lusta all influenced by a mix of Gaelic and Viking culture. Well-known as the homeland of the historic Clan MacLeod, the area is steeped in Scottish Folklore; access to Waternish is across the Fairy Bridge, believed to be the site where the magical Fairy Flag was bestowed upon the Chief of the Clan MacLeod.
