Situated about 10 miles west of Sunderland and about the same distance southeast of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in northeast England, lies Washington. Designated a new town in 1964, it has industrial origins with areas named after famous local people such as Parsons, Armstrong, Stephenson, Swan and Emmerson The origins of the name are not that clear, although it is possible that Washington is derived from Hwaesingatun meaning ‘the descendants of the estate of Hwaesing’ which in turn, means ‘descendant of Hwaes’, a Norse term meaning ‘fenced off land’.
