Uffington is a village situated in the Berkshire Downs, in the Vale of the White Horse. Although historically in Berkshire, boundary changes have the village now placed in Oxfordshire. Nearby on a hillside is the Uffington White Horse, from which the vale gets its name. The horse is a highly stylised image of a horse (some suggest that it perhaps represents a dragon), etched into the chalky hillside. There are good arguments on both the horse and dragon side. The figure is believed to date back from the late Bronze Age, when the local tribe worshipped a horse goddess.
