Troutbeck stands on the old coaching route (now more prosaically the A592) between Windermere and Patterdale beyond the Kirkstone Pass, with Penrith still further to the north. There are huddles of cottages dotted along the road here, villages and hamlets - Townend, High Green, and Troutbeck itself - and farmsteads of “statesmenâ€, the yeomen farmers who made a living from raising the region’s tough Herdwick sheep. The coaching age is still evidenced by places like the Queen’s Head Hotel, in the 17th century a coaching inn, its purpose reflected in the horse troughs round about, some of them with saints’ names carved into them.
