Troon is a resort town and port situated on the coast of South Ayrshire, Scotland, eight miles north of Ayr and three miles north-west of Glasgow’s International Prestwick Airport. Troon is famous for its Royal Troon Golf Club founded in 1878. The course originally had 5-holes before it was extended to 18-holes in 1886, and is now one of the host courses for the Open Golf Championship, the first time being 1923. The club has a second course named The Portland. Once a busy freight port and shipbuilders, Troon is now a focus for cruise ship docking, a marina for pleasure crafts, a lifeboat service and a roll-on-roll-off ferry service linking with Ireland.
