Once a market town, granted its charter by Henry II in 1256, Tollerton is now a village of about 1,000 inhabitants. Situated in the lovely Vale of York, Tollerton is roughly in the centre of a triangle formed by York, Knaresborough and Thirsk. While there are no markets these days, the link to Henry II’s days is maintained through holding an annual fair, as it was chartered to do three-quarters of a millennium ago. This takes place on the village green as it may have done all those years ago when the first was held.
