The small market town of Tenbury Wells is located on the southern bank of the River Teme, which forms the boundary between Worcestershire and Shropshire, close to the Herefordshire border. The river also feeds the nearby Burford House where it feeds the water gardens and pools that are rich in unusual moisture loving plants. Evidence of very settlement is scarce but the area was probably settled during the Iron Age; when St.Marys Church was being restored, following flood damage, in the mid-19th century the shaft of a 9th century Anglo Saxon Cross was found, the church tower is Norman in origin.
