Telford is to be found in Shropshire and around 30 years ago did not exist as a place. Telford was created as a New Town – made up of the towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley and Ironbridge which all retain some sense of their history today but is now collectively known as Telford. Telford was named after its most famous adopted son – Thomas Telford – a Scotsman by birth he became a surveyor of public works in Shropshire in 1787. With an excellent reputation as an engineer he was given the task of building a bridge over the River Severn, known today as Ironbridge, he went on to build canals linking ironworks and collieries, bridges and docks as well as roads, Thomas Telford built more than 1,000 miles of road in his lifetime and it is no wonder that when Telford, the town, was being conceived that they should name it after such an influential individual who had strong links with the area.
