The Cromar village of Tarland is situated six miles from Aboyne in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, 30 miles west of Aberdeen, close to the boundary of the Cairngorms National Park. Tarland has had a settlement in the area dating back to the 1st century BC. The area is abundant with Pictish symbol stones; a 4000 year old recumbrant stone-circle stands at Tomnaverie to the south-east of the village, with long cairns on Balnagowan Hill and Migvie graveyard has an interesting cross-slab. To the north is the Iron Age Culsh souterrain, a stone-lined underground store-house thought to have been used as a community cellar to store food.
