Tarbet is a small historic fishing town in mid-Argyll on the west coast of Scotland, known as the Gateway to the Kintyre Peninsular; Tarbet is situated a few miles from Kennacraig with the main ferry terminus to the Isle of Islay. Tarbet translates from the Gaelic Tairbeart, meaning narrow strip of land between two lochs, an accurate description of the town sandwiched between West Loch Kintyre and East Loch Tarbet, the area is close to being an island and in 1093 Magnus, son of King Olaf of Norway claimed Viking possession by dragging longboats across the isthmus, due to King Malcolm’s decree allowing the Vikings to annexe any land they could sail their boats around.
