Strood stands on the northern banks of the River Medway at its lowest bridging point, looking across the water to Rochester's magnificent Norman castle and cathedral - the second oldest in England. Although Strood is now a largely residential district, its history goes back to Roman times and its development was very much allied to the river, with a variety of businesses and industries springing up during the 1800s to cater for the nearby Chatham Dockyard. Nowadays, thanks to excellent road and rail links to London, Strood is popular as a commuter town.
