Strathaven is a historic town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland situated 7 miles south-west of Hamilton in the valley of the Avon Water. The market town grew around its 12th century Strathaven or Avondale Castle, rebuilt in 1458 but abandoned during the 18th century and is currently a ruin. Strathaven developed into an important town holding weekly markets; it was created a burgh of barony in 1450. The town continued to prosper during the 19th century with its weaving and brewing industries. Strathaven was once a Covenanter stronghold and in 1679 was the site of the Battle of Drumclog, fought just outside Strathavon between government troops and resident Covenanters.
