Stornoway is a busy town and the largest settlement on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, it has one of the best natural sheltered harbours which open out into the North Minch. The name is thought to be Norse for ‘steering bay’ and dates back to 1100’s with Stornoway Castle, although completely destroyed in 1653 by Cromwell the remains were used in the foundation of the pier c1800. The harbour partially surrounds the town and is home to one of the principal ferry terminals of the Outer Hebrides with a roll-on-roll-off car-ferry link to Ullapool on the mainland.
