Stoke St Michael is situated in rural Somerset, four miles North East of Shepton Mallet and eight miles to the West of Frome. It is a fairly large and thriving village that is easily accessible from the A37. Set in the limestone hills of the Mendips, there are a number of significant caving opportunities close to the village offered by the Caves of the Mendips. Amongst the most significant of these are Stoke Lane Slocker and the ones at the disused Fairy Cave Quarry. There is still and active limestone quarry nearby at Moons Hill Quarry.
