Stoke on Trent is actually made up of six towns, Tunstall at the northerly edge, Burslem, Stoke, Fenton and Longton at the southerly end with Hanley being Stoke on Trent City centre and collectively known as “The Potteriesâ€. The area though can trace its history back to the latter part of the Stone Age but it seems that the poorly drained clay soil made life here very difficult. It was this clay soil though on which Stoke on Trent was to build its fame and fortune. In the 17th century the realisation that there were abundant supplies of clay, lead, salt and coal was enough to encourage entrepreneurs to establish their factories in the area.
