St Pauls is the area surrounding Sir Christopher Wren's 17th Century Baroque masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, which resides on Ludgate Hill on the north bank of the Thames. With its awe-inspiring dome dominating the skyline, this is one of the world's most recognisable buildings. Wren began designing the cathedral - the fourth on this site - after its predecessor burnt down in the Great Fire of London. The interior is magnificent, and the 1695 organ played by Mendelssohn is still used in services, at which visitors are welcome.
