The village of St John's lies at the heart of Manx history and government. Here, at the grassy, four-tiered Tynwald Hill, the MPs of this self-governing nation hold a sitting every year on July 5 - a national holiday. The Tynwald is believed to be the world's oldest continuous Parliament, with the outdoor ceremony observed for hundreds of years. It begins with a service at the neighbouring St John's Chapel and continues amid scenes of pageantry and celebration including a military band, traditional music and dancing, and a fairground.
