St James's is an exclusive and expensive area of central London, long associated with royalty, aristocracy and upmarket retailing. Many of its original, grand houses have been converted into offices, but the privileged air of St James's still circulates around its palaces, fine terraces and gentlemen's clubs. The district is framed by Piccadilly, Green Park, The Mall and St James's Park, and Haymarket, and its foremost buildings are the royal residences. St James's Palace, built by Henry VIII, today hosts ceremonial and state events, and is also home to Princess Anne and Princess Alexandra.
