Southerness is a small coastal village in Dumfries and Galloway on a headland on the Solway coast in south-west Scotland situated 9 miles south of New Abbey. A lighthouse was built in 1748 to direct the ships into the River Nith, the lighthouse, now disused, is the 2nd oldest in Scotland. The village of Southerness was built in the late 18th century by Richard Oswald of Auchencruive. Surrounded by the panoramic scenery of the Galloway Hills, miles of sandy beaches and views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District in England Southerness is a popular holiday destination and an ideal location for touring Dumfries and Galloway, there are shops and amenities, holiday parks, hotels, self-catering accommodation and places to eat.
