Awarded 'Somerset Village of the Year' in 2005, South Petherton is actually a small country town situated along the A303 between Ilminster and Martock, about eight miles South East of Taunton. The River Parrett is close by, which is no doubt what attracted the first settlers about one thousand years ago. The land was also safe from tidal flooding, unlike much of the Somerset Levels at the time. With steep slopes and good views of the surrounding lands it was a good defensive point and it is claimed in The Saxon Chronicle of 680AD that 'Pedridia' was the site of a major battle in which King Kenwalk finally defeated the British.
