South Kensington was an agricultural area until 1851, when the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park took place. After the exhibition, its royal commissioners, including Prince Albert, used the profits to buy an area of land to be devoted to culture and education. Thus South Kensington came into being as a setting for the fine museums and colleges established there today. The Natural History Museum is especially famous for its dinosaur skeletons and outdoor ice-skating rink, a great winter attraction. The Science Museum is a favourite with children, who enjoy its interactive displays, while the Victoria & Albert Museum exhibits the world's broadest collection of art and design.
