Somerton is a picturesque Somerset town with a wide 17th century square. The square features an octagonal market cross, an imposing town hall as well as elegant houses and inns. The Anglican church, which dedicated to St Michael and the Angels, boasts a fine wooden roof which was lovingly carved by the monks of nearby Muchelney Abbey. The church dates back to the 13th century but the building has undergone several periods of remodelling. Somerton was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Sumertone, which may have been derived from from the Old English sae, mere and tun or 'The sea-lake enclosure'.
