Silloth (sometimes called Silloth-on-Solway) stands at the north west corner of Cumbria, looking across the Solway Firth to Galloway. For most of its history Silloth was just a small village, taking its name from the sea â€˜lathesâ€™ (barns) built by the monks of nearby Holme Cultran Abbey to store their wool. The Silloth seen today though is the creation of the Victorians. The town developed in the mid-19th century in two ways: as a port, and as a seaside resort. The development was planned with some sensitivity, the town benefiting from a large area of park known as The Green built between the sea-front and the main area of building.
