Almost an island, the historic town of Shrewsbury is surrounded on three sides by a loop of the meandering river Severn. It is not hard to see why a town was established and grew on this site at a time when attack from neighbouring groups or foreign invaders was often threatening. The water forms a natural defence to the east, south and west, while on the neck of land at the north is the highest of the two hills within the loop. Probably in Saxon times people began to settle on the land within the river loop and the town of Shrewsbury or Scrobbesbyrig began to grow.
