Four miles to the west of Cromer along the scenic A149 North Norfolk coast road lies Sheringham. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but Sheringham is largely a creation of the 19th century. One of its greatest glories is the Regency Sheringham Hall, whose gardens were designed in 1812 by Humphry Repton. They are particularly famed for the rhododendrons and azaleas in the extensive woodland garden, and for breathtaking views to the coast. Sheringham burgeoned after the arrival of the railway in 1887, allowing those wishing to indulge in sea-bathing to get in, and the fruits of the sea – in particular whelks, lobsters and crabs destined for London – to get out.
