Sheerness is a commercial port and the main town on the Isle of Sheppey, off the northern coast of Kent in the Thames Estuary. Originally a separate island but the channels, which separate it from the mainland, have since silted up. The town owes much to its origins as a Royal Naval Dockyard town. Established by Samuel Pepys on behalf of the Admiralty in the 17th century to repair and build warships, King Henry VIII, requiring the River Medway as anchorage for his navy, ordered a garrison fort as protection.
