Lying around 8 miles south east of Derby is the pretty country village of Shardlow which is to be found just off the A50 – far enough away not to be bothered by such a busy road and yet close enough to make it convenient. The village, there was a settlement here during the time of the Domesday Book, grew because of its proximity to the River Trent and was at the time a busy port. The canal, The Trent Mersey canal, was at one time a major connection for most of the canal systems throughout the Midlands making this a tremendously busy place, only to be replaced by a speedier form of transport in the 18th century – the railways.
