Selkirk is a historic town in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the hills overlooking the Ettrick Water. Hawick is a few miles south and Galashiels a few miles north. Selkirk was awarded royal burgh status during the 13th century although there is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to c500AD with the building of a church. There was also a Roman Fort built a few miles to the south-west of the town. In 1513, approximately 100 men of Selkirk, known as Souters, marched to fight for their king at the battle of Flodden, Thomas Clapperton was the only survivor of the battle; his statue stands in the War Memorial.
