While the market town of Sedbergh is in Cumbria, it is also somewhat anomalously within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with a National Park centre in the town’s main street. The town’s greatest claim-to-fame is Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by a provost of Eton Roger Lupton. The “new school†built in 1716 now holds the library, most of the buildings dating from the 19th century. Sedbergh became an independent school in 1875, and is famed for its rugby. Happily the rule obliging boys to wear shorts was changed in 1974.
