The earliest recorded man made articles found in the Runcorn area date back to somewhere between 1750 and 1550 BC. The Romans passed through the area on their way to Chester and after them the Anglo Saxons used the place as an encampment to resist the Viking invasion from the Mersey. Runcorn though was not any particular settlement at this time, historical records show that it was mainly meadow and woodland. Runcorn today is made up of two distinct parts – the Old Town adjacent to the River Mersey with the road bridge to Widnes dominating part of the skyline but with new modern apartment developments springing up along the waters edge.
