Rode is a former market town in Somerset, situated near the intersection of the A363 and A36. It is about five miles north-east of Frome and about another five north-west of Westbury. First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the town of Rode (formerly Road) grew in prominence as a market town trading on the ceremonial borders of Wiltshire and Somerset. The old village was positioned around St Lawrence's Church but much of that layout now lies in ruins and is only visible from the air. The heyday of the village was around the 16th and 17th centuries, when there were several mills at work in the town.
