Known as the Cradle of the Royal Stewarts, the town of Renfrew in the West of Scotland has been in league with royalty for centuries. Renfrew was granted Royal Burgh status in 1397. All of the High Stewart Kings were laid to rest on the grounds of nearby Paisley Abbey, and the area of Renfrewshire was the stamping ground of a young man from Elderslie by the name of William Wallace. He and his family were vassals of the Stewart Kings, and per-haps it was here in the bosom of Renfrewshire that the radical patriotism that sustained the resistance during the First War of Scottish Independence was born.
