The only coastal town in the Lake District National Park, Ravenglass provides a break and contrast from the hills and lakes of the region (though it is an excellent base for exploring the western side of the park), with a rich history and plenty of activities. On the estuary formed by three rivers, the Irt, the Mite, and the Esk, Ravenglass was for centuries a significant port. The Romans came to the town in 78 Ad, and for three centuries ‘Glennaventa’ was garrisoned by upwards of 500 Roman soldiers.
