Ramsey enjoys a happy reputation as the sunniest place in the Isle of Man, and its golden beaches, sheltered by the North Barrule mountainside, offer a scenic location for visitors hoping to work on their tans. Situated on the east coast, this is the main northern town, and its traditional seaside charm is accompanied by modern shopping. In the 1800s, Ramsey was a shipbuilding centre. Today it functions as a market town, although old traditions have survived: fishing vessels in the Irish sea frequently call at the harbour's repair and building yard, and round-the-island boat races are organised by the Ramsey-based Manx Sailing And Yachting Club.
